【Passage/本文】

The 2,000-year-old scrolls, found in the late 1940s in caves near the
Dead Sea east of Jerusalem, are among the most important sources of
information on Jewish and early Christian life.

They contain the earliest known copies of every book of the Hebrew
Bible (missing only the Book of Esther), as well as descriptions of
rituals of a Jewish sect at the time of Jesus.

The texts, most of them on parchment but some on papyrus, date from
the third century BC to the first century AD.

Only a handful of the scrolls exist in large pieces with most of what
was found separated into 15,000 fragments that make up some 900
documents.

There has been longstanding debate on how to order the fragments as
well as the meaning of what is written on them.

After their initial discovery the scrolls were tightly held by the
Israel Antiquities Authority.

Scholars continually ask the custodians of the scrolls for access to
them, but for most this is denied.

The keepers of the scrolls are delighted by the intense interest but
say that each time a scroll is exposed to light, humidity and heat,
it deteriorates.

This week half a dozen specialists embarked on an historic undertaking:
digitally photographing every one of the thousands of fragments of the
Dead Sea Scrolls with the aim of making the entire file --among the
most sought-after and examined documents on earth --available to all
on the Internet.

They are equipped with highly powerful cameras with resolution and
clarity many times greater than those of conventional models, and with
lights that emit neither heat nor ultraviolet rays.

The process will probably take one to two years, and more before it
is available online.

【Passage/本文】

US Airways announced in June that it was going to start charging coach
passengers on all its domestic flights $2 for soft drinks and bottled
water, as well as $1 for coffee or tea.

The other major carriers have yet to follow US Airways's lead--though
it may just be a matter of time.

Meanwhile most domestic airlines have replaced free meals in coach on
flights in the United States with at least some food sales.

Buying your own food or drinks at the airport is one alternative to
being held economic hostage by the airlines, but who has time to wait
in line for water when you're late for your connecting flight?

You can also pack a lunch at home --but just make sure your salad
dressing is in a three-ounce container, inside a one-quart, zip-top
plastic bag to get through security.

So what exactly do you get these days?

What follows is a sampling of the current food and drink policies for
American and Continental Airlines on domestic flights within the United
States, and what you can expect to shell out for a little sustenance.

The offerings are slightly better on international flights, on which
most carriers continue to offer free non-alcoholic drinks, meals and
snacks.

On its domestic flights American Airlines has free soda, water, coffee
and tea; beer, wine and cocktails are $6.

Snacks such as nuts, cookies or cheese and crackers are $3 or $4.

Light meals --like a turkey bagel sandwich--are available for $6 on
flights of three hours or longer.

Continental Airlines also offers free soda, juice, water, coffee and
tea; for beer, wine and cocktails, $5.

Peanut or pretzel snacks are free.

Meals are free on flights of two hours or more.

When it comes to flying these days, there increasingly is no such
thing as a free lunch.

題名:    Sorting Out Coffee's Contradictions

記者:  By JANE E. BRODY

【Passage/本文】

Hardly a month goes by without a report that hails coffee as healthful
or damns it as a potential killer.

Can all these often contradictory reports be right? Yes.

Coffee, after all, is a complex mixture of chemicals, several of which
may independently affect health.

Probably the most important effects of caffeine are its ability to
enhance mood and mental and physical performance.

At consumption levels up to 200 milligrams (the amount in 16 ounces of
ordinary brewed coffee), consumers report an improved sense of
well-being, happiness, energy, alertness and sociability.

Higher amounts though can sometimes cause anxiety and stomach upset.

It was long thought that caffeinated beverages were diuretics, but
studies found that people drinking up to 550 milligrams of caffeine
produced no more urine than when drinking fluids free of caffeine.

Above 575 milligrams however, the drug was a diuretic.

Heart patients, especially those with high blood pressure, are often
told to avoid caffeine, a known stimulant.

But an analysis of more than 400,000 people found no increase in heart
disease among daily coffee drinkers.

Though some studies have linked caffeinated beverages to bone loss and
fractures, human physiological studies have found only a slight
reduction in calcium absorption.

Caffeine's negative effect on calcium can be offset by as little as one
or two tablespoons of milk.

Here's a bummer.

Although caffeine speeds up metabolism, with 100 milligrams burning an
extra 75 to 100 calories a day, no long-term benefit to weight control
has been demonstrated.

In fact, in a study of more than 58,000 people, both men and women who
increased their caffeine consumption gained more weight than those who
didn't.

題名:    After Bike-Sharing Success, Paris Considers Electric Cars

記者:  By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

【Passage/本文】

The citywide bike-sharing plan that was begun a year ago in Paris was
so eagerly embraced by the inhabitants and tourists that the mayor is
proposing a four-wheeled version, using electric cars.

The program, called Autolib’will be run by the city of Paris and is
expected to begin in late 2009 or early 2010 with a fleet of 4,000
electric cars, 2,000 within Paris and 2,000 in the suburbs.

Autolib’would enable drivers to rent cars from one of the 700 planned
lots, both under and above ground.

A driver could pick up a car on one side of town then drop it off in
another ---and pay only for the minutes spent behind the wheel.

With the price of gas steadily rising and parking in Paris a chronic
headache, some drivers are delighted by the new project.

Autolib' could convince people who are considering buying their first
automobile from even buying one.

But cars, even electric ones, are already proving more divisive than
bikes.

Some see it as a step backward, fearing it would produce more traffic
and dependence on cars in an already congested city.

Members of the influential Green Party in Paris have been vocal
critics, even though the proposal calls for electric cars.

They want to reduce car use, period.

Financing for the project is still in the planning stages, and according
to a city spokesperson, zero-emission hybrids could be an alternative if
the city does not find a carmaker with the capacity to provide 4,000
electric cars in time.

Organizers say it is too soon to discuss many details, like how the lots
would be monitored, whether the driver's licenses of international
tourists would be accepted, or even how much it would cost to rent a
car.

題名:    Philadelphia Streets Unsafe for Manhole Covers

【Passage/本文】

Several hours a day, five days a week, an employee from the
Philadelphia Water department sits near the entrances of the city's
junkyards pretending to read a newspaper.

He writes down descriptions of passing pickup trucks and shirtless
men pushing shopping carts.

His mission is to figure out who is stealing the city's manhole
covers and street grates, increasingly valuable commodities on
the scrap market.

More than 2,500 covers and grates have disappeared in the past year,
up from an annual average of about 100.

The increase started in the spring of last year as the price of
steel and iron surged because of the growing demand for recycled
metals in China and India.

Thieves can get $5 or $10 for wrought-iron grates that cover
curbside drains and which weigh about 40 pounds.

The larger manhole covers in the center of the streets weigh about
double and triple that and are worth commensurately more.

Thieves have so thoroughly stripped manhole covers from some areas
that some neighborhoods look like obstacle courses, dotted with
orange cones to warn drivers and pedestrians of gaping holes, some
nearly 30 feet deep.

Two adolescents were injured in recent months after falling into
uncovered holes and motorists and cyclists are increasingly anxious
about damaging tires.

City crews tried screwing down the covers, but the thieves responded
by unscrewing them.

The city pressed scrap dealers to refuse material marked as city
property; but the thieves adapted again, using blow torches to
partially cut up or melt off the city labels.

One thing has helped.

The city has started welding the covers in place.

題名:    As Children Grow, Activity Quickly Slows

記者:    By TARA PARKER-POPE

発行日:  July 16, 2008

URL:     http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/16/health/research/16exercise.html

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

【Passage/本文】

Experts have long believed that physical activity wanes as children
enter their teenage years.

A recent study by The Journal of the American Medical Association
affirmed that belief.

The study followed about 1,000 children from around the country and
used monitoring devices to track the activity carefully rather than
relying on reports from parents.

The authors had the children wear accelerometers, devices that
measure movement, for a week at each of four ages: 9, 11, 12 and 15.

The findings, which measured everything from moderate walking to
vigorous athletic pursuits, showed clearly that even the most
energetic young children experience a precipitous drop in physical
activity as they reach puberty.

Young children spend an extraordinary amount of time moving about:
an average of three hours a day at age 9.

But in just a few short years, all that childhood energy disappears.

By the age of 15, daily physical activity is down to just 49 minutes
on weekdays and about a half-hour on weekends.

Age 13 appeared to be the point that daily weekend activity, for boys
and girls alike, dropped below 60 minutes.

Over all, boys were more active than girls, moving an average of 18
more minutes a day.

The study did not measure reasons for the decline, but researchers
noted that schools often curtail physical activity as children get
older.

Not only does recess stop, but many schools drop physical education
as well.

As children get older they tend to play video games or watch
television with their friends.

Parents need to be aware and help them balance that out a little
better.

【Passage/本文】

If there were box office charts for online videos, near the top of the
list right now might well be a four-and-a-half-minute video called
"Dancing."    http://youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&feature=user

With more than four million views on YouTube in the just over two weeks
since it appeared, it's the online equivalent of a platinum hit, seeping
from one computer to the next like a virus.

The title is not misleading.

"Dancing" shows a guy dancing: a big, doughy-looking fellow in shorts
and hiking boots performing a goofy arm-swinging, knee-pumping step.

The dancer is Matt Harding, the 31-year-old creator of the video, who
turns up grinning and bouncing in 69 different locations, including
India, Kuwait, Bhutan, Tonga, and Timbuktu.

Years ago he started his awkward dance at work at lunchtime during an
awkward pause or just to annoy people.

"It was sort of a nervous tic." Mr. Harding said.

On the video Mr. Harding sometimes dances alone but more often he's in
the company of others: South African street children in Soweto, bushmen
in New Guinea, dancers in India, and some oddly costumed waitresses in
Tokyo.

The crowds of people are all copying, or trying to, his flailing
chicken-step.

Children, not surprisingly, turn out to be the best at picking up on
Mr. Harding's infectious vibe.

The music is sung in Bengali by a 17-year-old native of Bangladesh
is both catchy and haunting.

The visual backgrounds in the video are often quite beautiful.

There is something sweetly touching and uplifting about the spectacle
of all these different nationalities, people of almost every age and
color, dancing along with uninhibited merriment.

You can't watch "Dancing" for very long without feeling a little happier.

題名: Low Mexican Gas Prices Draw Americans

記者: By ADAM B. ELLICK

発行日: June 25, 2008

URL: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/25/us/25gas.html
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

【記事要約】
When George Terrazas was mugged at gunpoint in the
Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez several months
ago, he vowed never to return.

That, however, was before gasoline hit $4 a gallon
in his hometown, El Paso, just across the border.

On Saturday, Mr. Terrazas was back in Ciudad Juarez,
wooed by its irresistibly low-priced gasoline--around
$2.66 a gallon.

And while there he picked up some six-packs of Tecate
beer and fruit, and even visited an orthodontist.

In all, he saved $200.

The border, he said, flashing a mouthful of braces,
is "our advantage."

Mr. Terrazas is among a flow of American "gas
tourists" who account for a 50 percent surge in
gasoline sales at Mexican service stations over
the last several months.

Even the Mexico Tourism Board is promoting the
journey across the border.

Many South Texans are buying all the fuel they can
south of the border.

One Texan in the trucking industry said he saved
$12,000 a month by fueling his four-truck fleet in
Mexico.

The low gasoline and diesel prices that draw
Americans here are a result of subsidies provided by
the Mexican government to curb inflation and
make fuel affordable to the poor.

The moment may not last.

Experts question how long the government can continue
providing gasoline subsidies, which will amount to
more than $20 billion this year.

For gas station attendants in Mexico, who earn $100 a
week, the surge in sales has meant extra money to
tuck into the pockets of their olive green overalls.

To tip attendants is the custom here and one of them,
flashing a brick-size wad of pesos and dollars,
said, "Americans tip better."
